Stefanie Gilbert, Ph.D.

Dr. Gilbert is a Clinical Psychologist who is licensed in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard University, where she received the Psychology Department Faculty Prize for her original research on fear of success in anorexic young women. She received an M.A. in political science from the University of Pennsylvania, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of South Florida, where she received the top scholar prize in her graduating class. Dr. Gilbert was a professor in the Psychology Department at Howard University for eight years, and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2007. She was a founding member of the university’s Women’s Studies Program. She has served on the Board of the Washington Society for the Study of Eating Disorders and Obesity since 1998, acting as the organization's president for six years. 

Dr. Gilbert is the author of numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed articles on eating disorders and body image, including “Body Shame in Childhood and Adolescence,” “The Media’s Role in Body Image and Eating Disorders,” "Eating Disorders in Women of Color," and “Feminist Perspectives of Eating Disorders.”

Dr. Gilbert is a member in good standing with the American Psychological Association, Maryland Psychological Association, National Eating Disorders Association, and Mental Health Association of Montgomery County. 

In her clinical work, Dr. Gilbert utilizes psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and feminist frameworks. She specializes in helping children, adolescents, and adults who struggle with eating problems, including overeating, bulimia, binge eating, and anorexia. In therapy, Dr. Gilbert helps individuals to become more aware of hunger and satiety signals they may have learned to ignore, and to feed themselves in a caring way. She helps people to identify their own personal emotional triggers for under-eating or overeating and to replace these behaviors with healthier methods of coping. In addition to working with people who have eating disorders, Dr. Gilbert enjoys helping people with relationship issues, anxiety, and depression.
