Susan Folwell, L.C.S.W., is in private practice at the Growth and Recovery Center where she works with adults, young adults, and adolescents. She received her Bachelor’s degree from The University of the South (Sewanee), and her Master’s degree from Florida State University. She is board certified by, and a member of, the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, and the National Center for Crisis Management. She also is Campbell Danger Assessment certified, and holds clinical licenses in Virginia and DC. She has researched interpersonal violence and family abuse, traumatic response, PTSD, emotional and severe emotional disorders, and the connection between spirituality and emotional health for over 20 years, working in psychiatric, hospital, educational, and inpatient and outpatient clinical settings.
Susan also works with The Women’s Center in Vienna, Va. where she manages domestic violence programs and serves as the Center’s spokesperson for domestic violence-related issues. In addition, she provides training and consultation throughout Metro DC, and is an active member of domestic violence and mental health task forces. Susan’s work focuses on trauma, all forms of interpersonal violence and abuse (physical, non-physical, dating, emotional, verbal, spiritual, sexual, elder), separation and divorce, and issues surrounding self-esteem, spirituality and life transitions. Her experience and compassion provide a keen understanding of the unique challenges her clients face. Susan’s therapeutic philosophy is collaborative, so that sessions become a safe haven in which to explore options, gain clarity and insight, and embark on the journey towards wholeness.
